Mapping the Electrome
We are developing biomembrane electrochemistry as a powerful technique for analysing cellular bioenergetics. Akin to metabolomics, we seek to use these technologies to perform electromics- the mapping of entire electron transport chains and other cellular pathways involving the movement of charges.

High-resolution Bioenergetics
Bioenergetic processes in cells take place over various time scales (fs-days), and rely on dynamic and heterogenous cellular processes. With collaborators, we study these processes with innovative biophysical techniques including ultrafast spectroscopy and super-resolution microscopy.

Biomusic Generation
We work with artists and designers to develop innovative art-science projects which go beyond traditional science communication. This includes development of the 'Photosynthesizer', a musical instrument that is controlled by the electrical activity of algae.

Engineering Electron Transport Chains
We are engineering microbial platforms which enable growth-coupled engineering of synthetic electron transport chains. These systems offer broad applications in sustainable biomanufacturing, drug screening and bioenergy production.

Controlling Microbes with Electrodes
Applications of synthetic biology often require external control of cellular behaviour. We exploit the native redox signalling pathways of microorganisms to develop electrogenetic systems, which enable gene expression to be controlled by an electrode.
